Energy Market

Ireland has ambitions for 70% of its Electricity to be derived from renewable sources by 2030. In support of this ambition, the Grid needs to be able to safely increase non-synchronous penetration on the grid from 65% to 95% by 2030 (as synchronous sources of Oil, Coal and Peat are displaced). This requires the electricity market to transform from its cost-based nature to a value-based alternative that rewards flexible and reliable capacity with the ability to evolve with market conditions of the future.

Data Centre

Datacentres have grown from a minor consumer of electricity only a few years ago to a consumer of some 200-terawatt hours in 2019. Eirgrid estimate electricity demand from data centres and other large energy users could more than double in a decade to account for almost 30% of the country’s electricity demand in 2028. The 2019 hyperscale data centre market is twice the size it was in 2017 and will grow x5 by 2024. The Grid’s capacity for new datacentres is becoming exhausted and policy is shifting in many metro areas to curtail the connection of new datacentres.

Technology Road Map

Given that the Energy Centre and its mode of operation is quite innovative to the datacentre industry, Gyrogy have been prudent not to overstretch the design and make it too unfamiliar. The current version builds on the existing trends in the industry to move towards Lithium Ion Battery technology and replace diesel generators with natural gas.
